The Annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Service

The Annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity Service for 2021 will be held on Thursday, January 21st at 9:30 am. It will be held virtually this year allowing more people to participate due to safety precautions related to the pandemic restrictions. It is being sponsored by the Office of Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs of the Catholic Diocese of Belleville and hosted by the First United Presbyterian Church in Belleville. Bishop Michael McGovern, the new bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Belleville, will be the preacher for the occasion, and Pastor Rob Dyer of First United Presbyterian Church in Belleville will be the zoom facilitator with his congregation’s music ministry providing the music for the service. At least fifteen different Christian traditions or denominations from various parts of Southern Illinois will take part in this year’s observance.
The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity began in 1910 and is observed every year from January 18th through January 25th. It is sponsored each year by the World Council of Churches in Geneva and the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of Christian Unity at the Vatican.
Please make this information known to your congregations as well as to your local ministerial alliances or associations. The Week of Christian Unity is to help Christians around the world pray for and realize the prayer of Jesus in John 17:21 “that they all may be one.”
